AIR TAWAR, MALAYSIA: Plantation Industries and Commodites Deputy Minister, Senator A. Kohilan Pillay wants the Selangor government to relocate the RM100 million pig farm project approved for Sepang in view of adverse reactions to it from locals.
"This is important to appease those who would be affected if the project is carried out," he told reporters after visiting a kenaf processing factory in Kampung Air Tawar, Perak Thursday (10 Apr).
Kohilan was responding to Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim's stated refusal to bow to presssure from any quarters for the project to be stopped or relocated, Bernama reported.
The massive pig-rearing project has been receiving adverse press coverage from Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia ever since state senior executive councillor Teresa Kok confirmed that the Selangor government had approved the project.
Kohilan said if the project were to go on, it should take into consideration the original suggestions made by former Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Khir Toyo to downsize the farm to not exceeding 250,000 pigs and that it should be for local consumption and not exports.
He had earlier denied the previous Selangor government of which he was the mentri besar had approved the project but later said it had been approved in principle.
Kohilan said existing pig farms were already causing a lot of discomfort and other problems to surrounding residents, especially the Malays, when the pig waste was not disposed of properly.
