KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: Malaysian police say they have detained a Japanese family of three who unfurled a pro-Tibet banner at the starting point of the Olympic Torch relay.
Separately, witnesses said the two adults and a boy were heckled and possibly roughed by Chinese bystanders during the confrontation Monday (21 Apr).
It occurred at Independence Square from where the Malaysian leg of the Olympic Torch run was to start later Monday.
The bystanders appeared to be Chinese nationals. Hundreds of them were gathered carrying Chinese flags.
A police official at the scene said the family was "taken in for documentation."
About 1,000 policemen have been deployed to protect the Olympic Torch against protests over China's Tibet crackdown and human rights record.
